Baines
Machine & Repair Works Founded
in 1914, Baines – a living, working museum – is one of the few machine
shops still using the methods and machinery of the early 1900s,
including a large number of lathes and milling machines driven by
overhead flat belts. Here, oil-well parts are still produced the way
they were in the late 1800s. 4162

The
Petrolia Discovery 4381

this working 19th-century oil field, you can walk in the steps of the
“hard oilers” who started a world-wide technological revolution. Oil is
still pumped from these fields by the giant Fitzgerald rig, consisting
of a central power plant with jerker rods reaching out to each well.
Award-winning heritage conservation site, recognized by Heritage Canada.
Petrolia Public

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Originally
a Grand Trunk Railway station, built in 1903, the building was
converted to the Petrolia Public Library in 1937. It remains a superb
example of early railway architecture. Original architectural features
include the two turret rooms, bevelled-glass windows, pine floorboards
and slate roof. Light
refreshments, music, draws and displays.

in 1865, this store was once the largest hardware store west of
Toronto. Founded to supply Victorian homes, it later specialized in
equipment for the burgeoning oil and gas production industry. Today, it
still supplies oil producers. Owned and operated by Charles Fairbank,
who represents the fourth generation of this family enterprise.

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last
backstage and clock tower tour at 11:45 a.m. Ticketed clock tower tours cost $5;
participants will be accompanied by Petrolia and Enniskillen
Firefighters. Built
in 1889, Petrolia’s Victoria Hall is a National Historic Site, a
municipally designated heritage building and a cultural center for
Lambton County. After a tragic fire in 1989, the building reopened in
1992 with the exterior authentically restored and a thoroughly modern
interior. It now houses the town hall and the 425-seat Victoria
Playhouse Theatre.
