Baines Machine & Repair Works
Founded in 1914, Baines – a living, working museum – is one of the few machine shops still using the methods and machinery of the early 1900s, including a large number of lathes and milling machines driven by overhead flat belts. Here, oil-well parts are still produced the way they were in the late 1800s.

In this working 19th-century oil field, you can walk in the steps of the “hard oilers” who started a world-wide technological revolution. Oil is still pumped from these fields by the giant Fitzgerald rig, consisting of a central power plant with jerker rods reaching out to each well. Award-winning heritage conservation site, recognized by Heritage Canada.

Originally a Grand Trunk Railway station, built in 1903, the building was converted to the Petrolia Public Library in 1937. It remains a superb example of early railway architecture. Original architectural features include the two turret rooms, bevelled-glass windows, pine floorboards and slate roof. Light refreshments, music, draws and displays.

Van Tuyl and Fairbank Hardware
394 Station Street, Petrolia
Dates/Hours Open:
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Established in 1865, this store was once the largest hardware store west of Toronto. Founded to supply Victorian homes, it later specialized in equipment for the burgeoning oil and gas production industry. Today, it still supplies oil producers. Owned and operated by Charles Fairbank, who represents the fourth generation of this family enterprise.

After a tragic fire in 1989, the building reopened in 1992 with the exterior authentically restored and a thoroughly modern interior. It now houses the town hall and the 425-seat Victoria Playhouse Theatre.
